Every once in a while I get out Kierkegaard's Journals--sometimes it's like turning on a floodlight in the deep woods at midnight; sometimes it's a bit like having an ice-cube stuck down the pants. As I thought about the Gospel reading from this past Sunday (of the Publican and Pharisee), I remembered a Journal entry from Jan. 7, 1839:
"What is so confusing about us is that we are at once the pharisee and the publican."
Well, he's right of course.
