A moment of thanks

With the economy in the crapper and all there hasn't been much work for an old carpenter to do. Happy to be framing again. We'll be siding the outside and trimming the inside of this one as well, so thank God for a little bump forward.

  1. Yeah, buddy. I worked one day this week and two and a half hours drive out of town. I've survived 3 recessions, but this one is the big kahuna. At 56 and no other real skill set I don't know what we're going to do if it gets worse. BUT...the lights are still on and I ate well tonight. Glory to God.

  2. Steve,

I've never had to scrounge for work; for 18 years it's been, as we say, "balls to the walls." We've built whole subdivisions, but now all the subdivisions under construction are in various stages of abandonment. My boss has kept me busy with little odds and ends for 6 months--everything from truck repair to crab sorting and oyster washing (he also owns a seafood company, which is going out of business next week!)

This house, at 3800 sq. ft., is being built for the son of a large convenience store/gas station chain owner. Maybe we should get into the petrol business.

Remember me in your prayers; I'll be praying for you and yours.

  3. Thanks, Nico. I've been pretty much BTtW for 26 years, or at least never lacked a day's work that I didn't voluntarily avoid and could have taken on a lot more than I have. But I'm down to scrounging now. Fortunately I know how to do quite a bit of "handyman" stuff so I'm not just a drywaller anymore. But even with that, its hard to find a couple hours work a day anymore. You have a good boss, I'm pretty much doing that with my helper just to keep him in groceries and rent for his family but I don't know how much longer I can pay him for stuff like working on our Church. Thanks for the prayers, and likewise you are in mine.
